About Me
I didn’t grow up with a clear roadmap to an “ideal” life. I grew up in South Africa, where opportunity is sparse and stability isn’t guaranteed. From a young age, I saw what financial stress, limited choice, and systemic inequality can do to people’s lives—not just their bank accounts, but their health, relationships, and sense of direction.
Moving to New Zealand opened up something different. Not just safety or stability, but the promise of choice. The chance to build a life that wasn’t purely reactive. A life where effort could grow into opportunity with fewer barriers.
Like most young adults starting out, I was excited to finally earn some money and have a bit more control over my life. It felt good to have a proper income of my own – and that feeling hasn’t changed. But while a lot of people my age see that money as something to be spent, I’m already thinking about how I can use it to build a life of freedom.
I don’t want to work forever. I don’t think many people truly do, unless they genuinely love what they do. But it’s not about never working again; it’s about having the option to choose how, when, and why to work. To not have to live paycheck to paycheck, struggling to make ends meet. To not have to fear taking a risk and starting my own thing.
For me, financial independence is only one piece of a much bigger picture. It’s about creating a life where decisions are guided by intention rather than necessity. A life where time, energy, and attention can be invested in what truly matters: personal growth, relationships, and projects that excite me. Experiences where I can derive true happiness from and live life to its fullest. That idea – having real options – is what eventually guided me to the concept of FIRE. However, the start of my journey would not be easy as I would soon discover how certain concepts failed to be applied in NZ.
The truth is, I don’t have it all figured out – and I probably never will. But that’s part of the fun; it makes it exciting. If I knew exactly how it would end, my journey would be uneventful. And honestly, how dull would a life without a little challenge be?
Elevate Your Life is my way of documenting a unique journey to Financial Freedom in real time. It’s a place to experiment, to share successes and failures, and to provide perspective for anyone else trying to navigate FIRE anywhere in the World. But it’s more than just money. Over time, I hope this space will expand to explore other key elements of a well-lived life – from health and fitness, to mindfulness, productivity, and lifestyle choices that support true independence and fulfillment.
I hope that by sharing my experiences—both the wins and the misfires—you might learn from them, gain inspiration, or at least realize that you’re not alone in trying to figure life out.
